Foreign Language Exams

Placement tests are given through Carmen Canvas and require students to record themselves responding to signed questions using ASL. Students are required to have a webcam and strong internet. The Department of Classics administers the Greek and Modern Greek exams. For more information or to schedule an appointment: 614-292-2744, 414 University Hall, 230 N. Oval Mall. These exams should not be taken more than one term prior to continuing study for these languages.

Greek

The following courses cover all basic forms of syntax and require the acquisition of a basic reading vocabulary. Greek 1103 and beyond assume the ability to read and comprehend the simpler prose of Xenophon, Plato, and the New Testament. Latin

The Latin placement test is an objective, multiple-choice exam. Extensive reading in Latin and review of grammar is suggested to prepare. Credit for higher-level courses is granted after an individual interview and/or further examination, performed by the Department of Classics.

Introduces journalism, literary prose and media. Students practice discussion and composition. Prereq: 1103. Not open to students with credit for 401.

  • 4002 Advanced Modern Greek II (U 3)

Completes the language sequence. Students develop translation skills and continue practicing conversation and composition. Prereq: 1103. Not open to students with credit for 402.

Examinations are administered by the department of instruction only. Students with previous knowledge of Chinese, Japanese or Korean who do not seek EM credit for this experience but who wish to enroll in a course above the 1101 level are required to take a placement test before permission to enroll is granted. Students who desire EM credit for previous language study or experience must pass relevant exams with an acceptable score. Chinese

Students wishing to take placement tests for Mandarin Chinese should contact the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at 614-292-5816 or email deall@osu.edu for information. Tests are conducted by appointment by department personnel. Students testing beyond the 1103 level may receive EM credits for higher level courses upon meeting eligibility requirements.

Japanese

All exams are 30 minutes in length.

Continuation of 1101.01. Knowledge of simple functions (expression desire, providing reason, making an apology); and familiarity of present and past-tense forms, and polite formal and informal speech styles is expected. The Department of Near Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures administers language proficiency exams in Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Persian, Turkish, Urdu and Uzbek. Students wishing to complete the proficiency exams can do so by appointment through nesa@osu.edu -- most business days between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. in 300 Hagerty Hall.

Proficiency exams are written (on paper or online -- though oral follow-ups are sometimes requested) and take up to approximately one hour. Language exams can be used to place students in language course work, to evaluate transfer language course work, and to verify language competency for graduate students in other departments.

As of August 22, 2023: No EM credit will be awarded for any courses in the 1101 - 1103 series. The 1101 - 1103 language tests will be used only as placement tests to determine which level a student should enroll in.
